MARKETING PRODUCT MANAGER
Vic is a 35-year-old director of product marketing
for a mid-tier consumer electronics manufacturer. |
| |
|
Vic began his career as a copywriter in advertising, and
over the years moved up the ladder so he could do more
in marketing than just write about other people’s
products. We’re meeting up with Vic as he checks
into his hotel in Las Vegas at 10:37 PM. He’s got
a packed schedule for the next 3 days. His company’s
events team has a big booth at this winter’s Consumer
Electronics Show and he’s an integral part of many
of their promotional activities here.

Day 1
Up at 7:00. Quick shower while e-mail downloads.
Got to get some answers back to the MarCom team
at HQ about the new print campaign for EMEA (Europe
Middle East Africa). They’re trying to expand
from 7 to 9 languages. Not sure that the localization
budget can handle it. 8:00 breakfast with the VPs
of Sales and Marketing to go over the press conference
for the afternoon and the sales force’s latest
reconnaissance on the competitors’ new products
at the show. There was an industry party last night
and the spies were out. Looks like they’re
safe on feature set, but the pricing might be a
problem. Vic works the booth and does 3 new product
demos on the stage in the morning. Grabs a $9 shrink-wrapped
sandwich for lunch (Thank goodness it’s on
his expense account) and does the demo again twice
in the afternoon before the press conference at
4:30. It went great, but sure enough, one of the
magazines nailed him on the pricing. Dinner with
his counterpart at his company’s most important
strategic partner. Chez Something-or-other French.
Saved by the expense account on that one, too! E-mail
before bed. Looks like they’ll have to cut
Finnish. Too bad. Maybe next year. |
 |
In the
Next Few Days...
Vic will take 53 phone calls on his dual mode 3G
mobile and make 47 of his own. He wraps up the EMEA
campaign from the airport lounge on the way back
to HQ. He’s crazy like this 9 to 10 times
a year, but he has 3-weeks paid vacation to make
up for it and this year he’s doing Tahiti
with family and Nepal with 3 friends from school.
He loves his job. |
